Clapping sticks are a traditional wooden percussion instrument where two sticks are tapped together to create a beat to accompany songs and ceremonies. Australian Aboriginal Clapping Sticks were traditionally made from the hard wood of the native eucalyptus tree, but other hard woods can be used. Aboriginal Clapping Sticks, called bilma, can be as simple as two plain sticks picked up from the ground or ornate works of art decorated with paint or wood burning. Often the designs have personal significance to the artist. The bilma often accompany the didgeridoos and can be played by men or women. Often, the clapping sticks were pointed to double as digging tools.
