Main Street Art Challenge: Gerrard India Bazaar BIA Discovery Walk

Presented with RBC Royal Bank, the STEPS Initiative launched the I heART Main Street Art Challenge, to support our city and the culture that brings our communities together. Through DIY art installations created in collaboration with local artists and Business Improvement Areas (BIAs) across Toronto and the Peel Region, the challenge helps to increase feelings of trust and community.

As part of the challenge, the Gerrard India Bazaar BIA has developed a local discovery walk in collaboration with PATCH Artist Rosena Fung, and a series of mandala inspired sidewalk decals designed by Roshni Wijayasinha.

Fung developed ‘Welcome to Gerrard India Bazaar!’ as artwork that helps guide visitors to the area through exploring local landmarks and other experiences, while celebrating the diverse South Asian history and culture in Little India! Discovery walk signage can be found at 1447 Gerrard Street East, 1424 Gerrard Street East, and 1415 Gerrard Street East.

As you walk through make sure to check out Wijayasinha’s 100 ‘Modern Mandalas’ sidewalk decals spread across the BIA that help promote the area’s other public artwork and installations and social distancing throughout the neighbourhood, while offering a kaleidoscope of bright patterns and colours.

The featured art is spread throughout the Gerrard India Bazaar BIA main streets and provides a fun and socially-distanced, self-guided art walk throughout the area. Make sure to scan the QR codes to unlock more content!
