The Orange Shirt has become a symbol of reconciliation, and a reminder that every child matters. Orange Shirt Day occurs annually on the same day as the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. It is a day designated for remembering, reflecting upon, and honouring the children and families who endured the residential school system in Canada.
We are displaying orange shirts to remember and honour the Indigenous children who were taken from their families by Canada’s residential school system. We hope these shirts will contribute to raising awareness of Canada’s painful history in its treatment of Indigenous people and serve as a step in our commitment to the ongoing process of reconciliation.
Please pause and reflect about the legacy and impact that the residential schools
have left behind. Next, take an orange shirt. Share a message of how Orange Shirt
Day impacts you, why every child matters, or your message of hope and reconciliation.
Using the paperclips provided, attach your shirt alongside the others on display.
Together these messages are a small way to remember the children and families
impacted by residential schools.
