À propos

Join us in a unique multimedia scrapbooking, journaling, and healing storytelling workshop that delves into the rich tapestry of our cultural histories and personal journeys. This engaging event is designed to help participants explore and document the principles that ground their cultures to highlight shared values and practices that truly resonate with lived experiences— challenging the idea of connecting borders with culture.

In this workshop, we will dismantle hierarchical notions of art, encouraging everyone to connect with their stories through creative expression. By using scrapbooking and journaling as tools, participants will uncover the deeper meanings behind their cultural identities and the ways in which these identities are interwoven with those of the broader community. Through this process, we will foster a deeper understanding of self and community, inviting the crucial question: "What are our shared cultural practices and identities grounded in?" and "What do they mean to you?"

Our goal is to acknowledge and celebrate the principles that underpin our cultures, emphasizing care as a shared responsibility and a fundamental aspect of the cultures we resonate with. Especially for those with migrant, immigrant, and diasporic identities, there are often notions that our connections to culture are rendered "invalid." This workshop aims to realign these personal connections as central acts of care and resilience. By centering care, we aim to build a sense of connection and empathy among participants, highlighting the importance of community and mutual support in our cultural practices.

Throughout the workshop, participants will have the opportunity to create personalized scrapbooks and journals that capture their cultural narratives, values, and memories. This creative process will not only serve as a means of self-expression but also as a way to connect with others and share stories that reflect the diversity and richness of our cultural landscapes. Whether you are a seasoned scrapbooker, an avid journaler, or a complete beginner, this workshop welcomes all. Bring your curiosity, creativity, and an open heart, and leave with a tangible representation of your cultural journey and a renewed sense of community and care. Join in connecting our cultures of care through the art of journaling and scrapbooking!

** Art supplies will be provided but feel free to bring any materials you’d like to utilize, such as personal photos, poetry, past writing, or other cultural items.**

Special thanks to our community partners, Exposure UBC and Artivism (UBC Arts & Culture).

Jesse Medrano-Ramos - BC Culture Days Ambassador

This event is facilitated and creatively directed by Jesse Medrano-Ramos, a 2024 BC Culture Days Ambassador, representing Vancouver. Jesse is an artist and activist, studying a double major of Visual Arts & Gender, Race, Sexuality & Social Justice. Jesse's journey is rooted in the Filipino act of Talambuhay, which means "to tell one's story." Through her art and storytelling, Jesse fosters solidarity and connection.

Their goal for this specific event is to help dismantle the idea that culture is grounded in nationalist and border politics, rather than believing our personal connections to culture come from histories and practices of care and love. This belief is reflected in their own experiences and artistic endeavours

Year-round, Jesse is the Student Director of Arts & Culture at UBC and this year’s Creative Director of the Artivism 2024 festival: Heart on Fire. The festival engages with the dialogue of love as a liberation practice and a festival highlighting radical creativity. Their work continues in creating spaces for marginalized communities and artists, including experience such as collaborating with the African Awareness Initiative for Black History Month celebrations or facilitating a workshop with Migrant Students United on narratives of home and borders.

Through their work, they utilize a variety of mediums, from digital art exploring the internet as immigrant spaces to intricate collages and sculptures dissecting class disparities. However, their true passion lies in creating and curating events that foster therapeutic storytelling and liberative engagement with art.
