À propos

aceart is proud to present a group exhibition titled What’s the Value of a Dollar?, featuring work by TJ Shin, Patrice Renee Washington, Shellie Zhang, Sean Weisgerber, GTA Collective, and Chester Vincent Toye. Curated by Matthew Kyba.

Join us for an evening of refreshments and music by DJ $uraj. aceartinc. will be open from 6pm - 11pm.

“What’s the Value of a Dollar? invites 6 artists and collectives to examine how profit-driven entities have historically exploited and dominated societies, communities, and bodies. Using video, installation, photography, and painting, the exhibition enfolds complex matrices of racial politics, socio-economic (dis)parity, and political agency to argue that North American economies not only exist, but flourish through marginalizing their own consumers and workforce. Capitalist frameworks feed off of subjugated bodies to reinforce economically productive hierarchies of race, culture, gender, and affluence. The exhibition’s title questions how monetary capital is traded and valued against ethical, cultural, and physical sacrifice. Included works employ capitalistic visual language, which acts in protest against market-based economies. Research-based approaches are utilized to historically map capitalism’s reliance on the communities it targets and marginalizes. What’s the Value of a Dollar? argues that there cannot be ethical consumption and production under capitalism, and offers ways to reclaim agency by co-opting corporate tactics and language historically used to disenfranchise.”

aceartinc.

aceartinc. is an Artist-Run Centre located in the Exchange District of Winnipeg, Canada.

Founded in 1983, aceartinc. exhibits 5 major exhibitions a year by contemporary visual artists. We welcome submissions to our open calls from all emerging contemporary artists and curators working in any media.

The gallery also runs several ongoing projects and hosts numerous one-offs. This Artist-Run Centre is passionate about the work being produced by contemporary artists and arts writers and critics in Canada and abroad. Many successful, well-known and not-so-well-known Canadian artists have shown work at ace early in their careers – we are an established (but not establishment) part of the unique ecosystem of Canadian contemporary art.
