Create and Connect: Truth and Reconciliation Day at MONOVA

On Reconciliation Day, programming at MONOVA will be offered free for families to gather and reflect. Many activities will be availible throughout the day for families to learn from together:

-Gallery tours, belongings and archival materials focusing on the history of Sḵwx̱wú7mesh and Səl̓ílwətaɬ First Nations

-Readings of children's stories exploring the history of residential schools

-Oral storytelling sessions of Coast Salish and Indigenous legends told by one of MONOVA's Indigenous Cultural Programmers

-Games on the themes of Indigenous rights in Canada and the history of residential school apologies will be available to play

-A self-guided activity sheet to encourage explorations of Indigenous history in MONOVA's galleries

-Space to write messages of hope and reconciliation on orange paper t-shirts and rocks for MONOVA's community display and garden

MONOVA: Museum of North Vancouver

The Museum of North Vancouver offers a variety of engaging exhibits that celebrate the rich history, Indigenous heritage, and natural beauty of North Vancouver. It features permanent and temporary exhibits, interactive displays, and educational programs and events for all ages and abilities. The Archives in Lynn Valley provides access to historical records, photographs, maps, and other materials. It serves as a resource for researchers and the public to explore the rich history of the area. MONOVA also supports several online and offsite experiences, allowing people to engage with North Vancouver’s stories from across the globe.

MONOVA is deeply committed to truth and reconciliation which is the foundation for all of the work carried out in collections development, exhibits, events and outreach projects. We have a signed Memorandum of Understanding with the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) and Səl̓ílwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) First Nations. This partnership focuses on developing immersive historical content from Indigenous perspectives and celebrating Indigenous storytelling and heritage.
