About
--I Am Because You Are-- That is the Ubuntu philosophy that we, KinFolk, will teach the youth aged between 14-18. We will employ engaging, interactive and creative teaching methods to inspire the youth to learn this African Proverb and apply it in a meaningful way. Teaching methods that will be used include but are not limited to storytelling, music, poetry, painting and dance. We want to encourage a sense of community resulting in the youth understanding that they have a responsibility to themselves and one another. It is imperative that the youth also understand their responsibility and shared history with Indigenous people. Creating a space where the youth can create life long friendships and understand what it looks like to stand by, with and for Indigenous people and equally as important is to help them know how Indigenous people have stood by, with and for them through the decades of colonization, marginalization and racism. Over a series of several weeks with meeting once a week, we will work with children of colour, Ukranian and Indigenous youth towards a show that they will showcase their story. Through a creative outlet of their choosing, they will tie their story in with the rest of their peers. We know that one story, one life touches and can influence others. We will encourage these youth to trust and tell their own story as well as connect with others.

KinFolk is described as a creative tribe that is a beautiful blend of storytelling, soul and Caribbean/African vibes. We work under the African proverb which is Ubuntu, meaning I am because you are. We are Indigenous people of Karukera, Baroste land and Runyankole people and we have a deep connection and commitment to stand with, by and for Indigenous people here in Turtle Island. We live at the House of Hope, a place that provides spaces for artists to create, to heal and to inspire themselves and others. We believe that children are the future and we invest heavily in ensuring that they trust in themselves and they foster the relation they have with the world around them.
