About
Located next to Knox Presbyterian Church Sixteen, the cemetery contains the grave markers of some of the earliest settlers to the area. Visitors will tour the graves of some of the early inhabitants of Proudfoot’s Hollow including Sarah McKay (1874-1880); Mary Proudfoot (1801-1846); and Mary Triller (1804-1884).
The tour will also provide an overview of the range of grave makers that have been used over time, from standard upright headstones to subtle flat headstones to more elaborate and grandiose obelisk markers. The size, material and design of the grave markers reflect the era in which they were produced and the relative wealth and personal preferences of the people for whom they were made.
Organizer
Knox Presbyterian Church Sixteen
Knox Presbyterian Church Sixteen (Knox 16) is a historic congregation rooted in Oakville since 1845, located beside Lions Valley Park. The church and cemetery are recognized as a designated Cultural Heritage Landscape for their deep ties to the early settler community and Gothic Revival architecture. Today, Knox 16 is embracing a new vision centered on contemplative worship, creation spirituality, and ancient prayer practices. Alongside its restoration efforts, Knox 16 seeks to offer both a sacred gathering place and a welcoming space for the wider community.
