From Kitchen to Kiln: Women's Culinary Labour on Ontario Tobacco Farms, 1950s-1970s

This lecture will discuss women's work on tobacco farms in Ontario in the second half of the twentieth century. Often ignored is the important culinary labour women performed as they were expected to cook daily meals for the farm's workers. Through interviews with farmer's wives and analyses of the recipes served, this lecture will illuminate how the job of cooking, though underappreciated, was integral to a successful tobacco harvest each year. Dr. Rebecca Beausaert is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of History at the University of Guelph.
