Alberta artist Adele Duguay will be displaying her unique collection of Spirit Creatures. Adele photographs the astonishing shapes and textures of rock in dramatic landscapes such as Writing on Stone Provincial Park, Alberta; Canyon de Chelly National Monument, Arizona; and the coastline of Gabriola Island, British Columbia. These images are assembled and glued by hand onto 7 ft tall wooden panels creating a visionary totemic pantheon that stretches the imagination.

These unusual artworks tell a story of how ancient stone formations are ever-present and animated in the lives of people. Rocks carry information and energies that we can access. They are talismans, altars, memorials, thresholds, data holders, and tools for healing. Like intricately crafted monumental castles and churches, natural locations can also inspire a sense of the sacred: canyons, cliffs, and shorelines reveal the passage of eons – putting us in our place – so to speak.

Adele’s interpretation of the natural world goes beyond her career as a landscape designer. In this new work she delves deeper into the mystical essence of stones – allowing their pattern, colour, texture, and character to speak to the viewer of power, wisdom, truth, and grace. Each person’s experience of the Spirit Creatures will be unique. Here we have an opportunity, as the hands, feet and beating hearts of our ancestors, to reach into the past and communicate in a new way with our oldest relatives. What wonders they have known.
