About

Presented with RBC Royal Bank, the STEPS Initiative launched the I heART Main Street Art Challenge, to support our city and the culture that brings our communities together. Through DIY art installations created in collaboration with local artists and Business Improvement Areas (BIAs) across Toronto and the Peel Region, the challenge helps to increase feelings of trust and community.

As part of the challenge, the Riverside BIA has developed a storytelling exhibit titled 'Humans of Riverside: Giving Voice and Making Space for BIPOC' to highlight the experiences of five BIPOC (Black Indigenous and People of Color) members of the Riverside community.

These exhibits feature the illustrated portraits by PATCH Artist Yshmael Cabana and typographic artwork by PATCH Artist Bareket Kezwer. Cabana’s portraits give life to the stories captured from local community members. Kezwer’s typographical works highlight key themes in each featured community member’s story.

The resulting artwork and stories are spread throughout the Riverside BIA main street and provide a fun and socially-distanced, self-guided walk throughout the area. Make sure to visit all 5 storefronts and to scan the QR code that allows you to unlock more about the person behind each story.

Don’t miss your chance to catch the rest of the challenge installations! Visit our activation map and share images using #mainstreetartchallenge on social media.
