About

Join us as we celebrate diversity in Paris, ON!

This project invites you to paint a bird that represents you- where you come from, who you are, what you believe in. Birds are made from materials found locally such as cardboard, saw dust, and corn husks. All birds will be hung throughout downtown Paris, with the main live exhibit in display at The Paris Wincey Mills Co (31 Mechanic St).

Painting workshops are Pay What You May, and at the end of Culture Days participants are welcome to take their birds home to keep.

The project Aves Sin Paraíso (Birds Without Paradise) started in Oaxaca, Mexico in 2016 as artist Manuel Molina aimed to raise awareness about the importance of freedom for birds who are kept caged as pets. Local children and elderly people built birds, covered them with corn husks, and painted them. A live art display in various cities throughout Mexico showed colourful birds hanging on main downtown roads.

This project was then adapted in 2018 at the Mexico-USA border to raise awareness about immigration issues. Birds displayed in Tijuana faced the American border, while birds displayed in San Antonio faced the Mexican border.

Inspired by these initiatives, and with the help of Manuel Molina, local small businesses La Trenza Tacos, Forest & Folk, and Mountain WoodWork Canada bring this project to Paris, ON. As a growing community, it is our wish to highlight and celebrate the growth in all kinds of diversity in our area. Paris Birds for Diversity invites you to join this celebration!
