Alchemy Artist Residency: Prince Edward County

Field Notes is a self-guided temporary public art exhibition in various locations throughout Prince Edward County including Hillier, Wellington, and Carrying Place brings together artwork by seven artists who participated in Alchemy Artist Residency in 2023.

Alchemy pairs working artists with participating wineries in order to create work in response to a landscape, that while stunning, represents a harsh climate and rocky clay-like soil. Artists spent a portion of the county’s harvest season reflecting on what compels people to continue to create, grow, farm, and live on the county’s western edge.

Field Notes allows artists to collect tell and document multiple stories showcasing what compels people to continue to create, grow, farm and live here. The result is an ever-deepening relationship and understanding between and among residents, farmers, makers, growers, and seasonal agricultural workers. and artists.

These works –collectively and individually examine themes of collaboration, labour, creative expression and food sovereignty and community in a rural agricultural setting.

*Extensive details will be provided by September 1, 2023!

Alchemy Artists Residency

Since 2017, Alchemy, an artist-run residency, has taken place on the county's western edge, specifically Hillier. Through Alchemy, local and visiting artists make and share art, food and conversation with long-time residents, farmers, bakers, winemakers, seasonal agricultural workers, and visitors. This year, eight visiting artists and ten farms and wineries are participating in our programming initiatives between July and October.

At our 2023 Open Studio and ArtistsTalk in Hillier Hall (proposed date TBC ), artists will share work in various mediums inspired by the people and land of this dynamic rural agricultural setting. This Event celebrates and acknowledges both people and place.

Community Open Studio brings artists, community members, and visitors together to explore, learn, and where we create, work and live. Alchemy artists collect, tell, and document multiple stories showcasing what compels people to continue to farm, work and live here.
