About
Join the Alberta Craft Calgary Gallery and artist John Groen for the reception of his SPOTLIGHT exhibition Wood Reimagined.
John Groen is a former woodworking teacher who learned from his father to transform “unusable” wood into beautiful furniture. He blends old-school craftsmanship with playful innovation, and incorporates repurposed or offcut wood, adding history and character to each piece.
His signature material is dyed maple veneer, typically found in skateboards. Through experimental bends, layers, and lamination. John combines these colourful sections into bowls, charcuterie boards, and wall art. His craft is about giving old wood new stories - stories that you can eat off, set things on, or hang with pride.
