Adapted from a three-day session at the Art Student's League in New York, this hands-on online workshop led by artist & ECUAD faculty Alex Philips is designed to give drawing enthusiasts a direct experience of spontaneous creating in the moment, bypassing deliberation and conscious planning. No drawing experience necessary and all ages are welcome to join in!

The only materials needed are a few large sheets of paper and some drawing supplies from your local arts shop or dollar store. This session will consist of 3 twenty-minute guided sessions, each focused on a different aspect of drawing, divided by 5-minute breaks.

Session Format - Online

Live-streamed on the Zoom platform as a webinar. Registration is required.

Participants will not be on camera on during the workshop.

Live English captions provided in real time within the Zoom app.

Chat feature open for participants to send their questions and comments to the instructor.

Hands-on component will take place from 1:00 – 2:00pm, and we will open up the floor to comments and questions from 2:00 – 2:30pm.

Participants may opt to turn on their audio/video for the discussion at the end of hands-on component, but this is not mandatory.

Session will NOT be recorded, this is a live-stream only.

Suggested Drawing Jam Supplies:

Participants should have a minimum of four large sheets of drawing paper: 18” x 24” or larger, and a flat surface on which to work or a drawing board.

Participants should also have a selection of drawing media of their choice such as pencils, graphite sticks, willow and/or compressed charcoal, sharpeners, and erasers.

About the Instructor:

Alex Phillips has been teaching courses in art, anthropology, and creative processes at Emily Carr University for nearly twenty years. She holds degrees in sculpture and socio-cultural anthropology from the University of Washington, and maintains an active studio practice in figurative sculpture and drawing which focuses on individual freedom in mass culture through the lens of the carnivalesque. Alex’s work has been exhibited across North America and in the UK. A former illustrator for both British Columbia’s major news networks, she has received numerous awards including grants from the Canada Council, the BC Arts Council, and the International Sculpture Competition.
