About

Welcome to the St. Catharines Envisions Diversity and Inclusion Art-based Workshop! This event aims to encourage the People of St. Catharines to reflect on the current changing demographics of our beloved city. Participants will come to engage in an art-based workshop to express their ideas and develop artwork that represents their understanding of, and aspirations for, diversity and inclusion. Also, participants will be able to describe their illustrations verbally and engage in interactive activities that develop awareness of diversity and inclusion.

Join one of our sessions o have fun and help shape a better future for St. Catharines rooted in our great Canadian values.

The venue is prepared to accommodate 44 people in total organized in two sessions on the basis of first come first served. Masks required, social distancing in effect, screening protocols, and enhanced cleaning/hand sanitizing will be observed.

Dr. Neivin Shalabi at Niviana Academy for Educational Training and Consultation

Dr. Neivin Shalabi is the founder of Niviana Academy for Educational Training and Consultation. She grew up in Egypt and earned her M.A. and Ph.D. in Higher Education from the University of Denver in the State of Colorado in the USA in 2008 and 2012, respectively. Dr. Shalabi immigrated to Canada in 2015 as a visiting scholar in the Faculty of Education at Brock University.

Dr. Shalabi has a firm commitment to advancing equity and justice in society. Toward this end, she strives to promote the ideals of diversity and inclusion by leading a host of initiatives through training, teaching, research, and community service.

The mission of Niviana Academy is to advance educators for effecting positive change. Niviana achieves its mission through promoting ongoing professional development for educators and life-long learning for everyone. With respect to diversity and inclusion, Dr. Shalabi offers training workshops to equip educators with the necessary competencies to cultivate learning environments that acknowledge, welcome, and celebrate students from diverse backgrounds through Niviana Academy for Educational Training and Consultation.

In her pedagogical practices, Dr. Shalabi employs the principles of Universal Design for Learning so that all students could feel included in her classes, irrespective of their academic capabilities. Also, she uses a variety of teaching activities, makes use of web 2.0 technologies and devises various assessment strategies to accommodate students with different learning styles and fairly assess learners with differing intellectual talents. Additionally, Dr. Shalabi is keen on cultivating leadership skills in her students and providing them with professional development opportunities beyond the classroom.

Dr. Shalabi further advances diversity and inclusion in her research through peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations. On the community level, she collaborates with local mosques and churches on community service-learning projects.

Through St. Catharines Envisions Diversity and Inclusion Event, Dr. Neivin Shalabi aims to provide participants with a welcoming space to articulate their understanding of, and aspirations for, diversity and inclusion in our beloved City of St. Catharines through creative artwork.
