About

The One Book, One Halton Hills 2021 title for 2021 is Gutter Child by Jael Richardson! Listen to Jael Richardson discuss her best-selling novel, her writing process, and plans for the sequel.

Set in an imagined world in which the most vulnerable are forced to buy their freedom by working off their debt to society, Gutter Child uncovers a nation divided into the privileged Mainland and the policed Gutter. In this world, Elimina Dubois is one of only 100 babies taken from the Gutter and raised in the land of opportunity as part of a social experiment led by the Mainland government. But when her Mainland mother dies, Elimina finds herself alone and on a journey to discover who she is and where she belongs.

Jael Richardson is the founder of the Festival for Literary Diversity (FOLD), Canada’s first festival for diverse authors and storytellers. Gutter Child is her debut novel.

This event is part of our One Book, One Halton Hills program series. In 2021, our community is reading Gutter Child by Jael Richardson.
