About
Lucia Laford (Waawaaskone Kwe) will host a Gathering at the Art Gallery of Algoma to celebrate her multi-site installation at various cultural sites in Sault Ste. Marie. The work, done in Lucia’s woodland style, will speak to the process of reclaiming culture, and the Indigenization of public spaces.
Lucia Laford (Waawaaskone Kwe) (she/her) is an Anishinaabe and Irish artist born in Baawaating, ON. She is a proud two-spirit Ojibwe Kwe. Laford paints in a Woodland style that has been passed down by her father, and she has a spiritual connection to her work established through her healing path. She is a passionate Indigenous Arts Educator who teaches workshops and classes on Woodland and floral painting, drawing, and leatherwork. Lucia paints to connect people and herself back to our original obligations as caretakers of this land, the waters and all of creation, guiding those that occupy this land towards reconciliation and decolonization.
Dibaajimo. she tells a story. by Lucia Laford is commissioned as part of Ontario Culture Days' Creatives in Residence series presented in partnership with The Art Gallery of Algoma.

Organizer
Ontario Culture Days
The Ontario Culture Days Festival is an annual celebration of arts, culture and heritage taking place each fall across the province. Each year, we work with organizers of all disciplines to produce this province-wide festival. Organizers host programs throughout Ontario and invite the public to participate for free.
Ontario Culture Days lives at the local level. We support organizers from the smallest hamlets to the largest cities, while coordinating with other national and provincial Culture Days partners. We support the success of our sector colleagues through resources and network development, while highlighting the breadth and heterogeneity of Ontario’s arts and culture to the wider public.
