This fall, Wordstorm joins the many ranks of organizations around the world participating in 100 Thousand Poets for Change*, a global celebration that calls for a more just and sustainable future so that all beings, human and non-human alike, can thrive. On Sept. 23, you're invited to attend this special open mic in Nanaimo’s Old City Quarter. In partnership with Nanaimo's local bookstore, Windowseat Books!
The event happens from 1 to 3 pm adjacent to Windowseat Books, located at 309 Wesley St. Poets and writers of all genres are invited to register for this open mic style happening by emailing an expression of interest to: [email protected]. Prefer to be a listener? We'll have plenty of seating.
The event kicks off Wordstorm’s fall/spring 2023-24 season of programming focused on the idea of Restor-volution. This concept, developed by Wordstorm’s artistic team, asks how poets and writers can move the conversation to explore and rethink the ways that we relate to our planet and to each other to help restore harmony, balance, and equity for all species that share this world. Not a revolution, but a new stage of evolution that honours the wisdom of generations who understood that humanity and nature are not divisible, but are inextricably connected.
“This event encourages all community members to join toward supporting the idea that art has the ability to advance a conversation around the most pressing issues of our time to new heights, recognizing that we all have a role to play, as creators and as audience members,” says Wordstorm’s artistic director, Carla Stein. “This is fundamentally about that creative spark of hope that can inspire and unite us all.”
*100 Thousand Poets for Change is a registered non-profit initiative that was imagined and brought into operation by poet and editor of Big Bridge Press, Michael Rothenberg, and Big Bridge Press designer, Terri Carrion. Since 2011, 100 Thousand Poets for Change has been encouraging poets around the world to connect locally and share work that will contribute to a transformation toward global peace and sustainability. Each year since its inception, a global day of celebration that invites poets, musicians, and artists around the world to promote peace, sustainability, and justice has taken place.
