About

This Culture Days come and see Lane Creek Park Ravine (beside the Mission Library) through a new lens.

Brenna Maag will be installing her project Camera Illumina, an immersive experience made using the ancient technology of the camera obscura. Take a look through three different handmade cameras that focus your attention on the ravine and the details and movement that often go unnoticed in our natural landscape. This ancient technology is a unique tool for noticing and creating intimacy with the land through observation, and sensory experience.

The project was inspired by an exploration of Brenna’s connection with the land where she lives after encountering the notion of being in a ‘reciprocal relationship with the land’ in the book Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teachings of Plants by the Potowatami botanist Robin Wall Kimmerer. Robin describes a way of being that is “rooted in intimacy with a local landscape where the land itself is the teacher.” Reading this made Maag rethink her relationship to her home, the ancestral land of the Stó:lō people. As she considered this broad theme, the act of paying attention emerged as a starting point for creating a reciprocal relationship with the land. Maag is a settler artist living on the unceded, ancestral, and occupied territories of the Scowlitz, Matsqui, Kwantlen, and Leqá:mel First Nations.
