To Build | To Simplify, an exhibition by Jordan Miller, September 24-November 2, 2019

With over 20 years of art exhibition experience, Jordan Miller is well-known for creating unique and brightly coloured abstract works with a significant personal life story. Her works are about social interactions, physical responses or emotional reactions. No matter how hard she peels back the layers to simplify, or to build new layers, she remains connected to the experience. Although these experiences may be abstract beyond recognition, she invites viewers to create their own story.

For this exhibition, To Build | To Simplify, Jordan reworked several previously completed artworks. Words, lines, complex structures and a more cohesive mix are what separates this show from past exhibitions. This process took Jordan to new places by simplifying the process, leaving 'white negative space' or building layers of ink, acrylics, image transfers, or by painting over pouring medium art. Glimpses of the layers below, or using the texture from the past work, enhance the piece and show the change in thought or experience. For the most part, her colour vibrancy has reverted to more muted tones. Others remain bold and intense.

The exhibition hosted at Prairie Fusion Arts & Entertainment Centre is dedicated to the memory of Virginia Miller, Jordan's paternal grandmother. Virginia was on the board of directors of Portage District Arts Centre (1980s) as President, Vice President and Chair. She believes that her grandmother's love for the arts, and childhood experiences, taking her to shows and concerts, led her to become an arts professional.
