Seeking comfort is a 60-minute, self-guided soundwalk that invites participants to stroll, even linger and loiter, and listen to the sounds of Vancouver’s alleys and beyond.
Presented by Vancouver New Music and Vancouver Soundwalk Collective.
As Frauke Behrendt writes, “soundwalking is a spatio-temporal, embodied, situated, multi-sensory and mobile practice”. Inspired by this and what Jean-Luc Nancy describes as voices possessing a presence that moves and breathes beyond a location, and in particular, Hildegard Westerkamp’s seminal notions on the intermixing of aural ecologies, Seeking comfort encourages listening to the milieu of pandemic life through the lens of public and domestic space.

Vancouver New Music
Vancouver New Music engages communities in the exploration, creation, and experience of progressive and outstanding new music. VNM is dedicated to exploring and contextualizing new music and sonic art, through concert presentations, festival, community, and workshop events. VNM regularly commissions and premieres new works by Canadian composers, presents leading and emerging electroacoustic and electronic music artists, international composers and performers, sound installations and music theatre. VNM presents an annual festival that focuses each year on a theme within the new music landscape, and explores the interaction of contemporary music with other disciplines such as theatre, installation and media arts. Other activities include lectures and workshops with visiting artists, ensemble workshops and presentations open to the community, and other sound art and new music related community events.
