About

2020 Culture Days Invitation:

Harvest the North ‘Create a Scarecrow Challenge’

for the Community Gardens at Riverside Park in Bancroft Ontario

It has been a heck of a year! Harvest the North wants to inject some fun and creativity into our community to celebrate the growing season. Join us! Here is what we are planning.

Harvest the North will provide a 6 x 4 foot cross-shaped wood frame for your

scarecrow and a stuffed feed bag for your scarecrow’s torso. This year - to be safe because of the pandemic - you will need to supply the clothing and accessories that you choose for dressing your scarecrow. You will also need to create the head for your scarecrow.

To be involved in making your scarecrow for the gardens this year, there are two options.

1. You can pick up the wood frame and torso from North Hastings Community Trust to take home and construct there. Please reserve these materials by calling North Hastings Community Trust at 613-332-3675, to be picked up from Tuesday Sept. 22 to Friday Sept.25 between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.

Then you will bring your creation to Riverside Park on Saturday Oct. 3 by noon.

Harvest the North people will install it for you on one of the garden beds.

OR

2. You can come to Riverside Park on Saturday Oct. 3 with the materials you need to complete your scarecrow. Your wood frame and stuffed torso will be at the park, ready for you to finish your scarecrow under a shelter outdoors in the park.

On site, we will provide staple guns and twine to secure clothing, accessories and your scarecrow’s head. We encourage you to bring your own extra plastic bags to use for stuffing and any other small tools you might want on hand (scissors, sewing needles, etc.) This year, tools cannot be shared among groups.

Note: We will have available socially distanced covered work spaces. This means you must reserve a spot if you want to create your scarecrow at the park with us. Call 613-332-3657 to book a time and space. The number of spaces available are limited in order to accommodate social distancing.

All scarecrows will be kept on display until after Thanksgiving weekend - for the community and visitors to enjoy.

North Hastings Community Trust / Harvest the North

North Hastings Community Trust (NHCT) is a small, community based agency working to address the impacts of poverty and injustice in our rural area. We are at an interesting place in our history, as we are joined by artists, mechanics, designers, farmers, teachers, small businesses, social workers, and local politicians - all concerned about the survival of our small communities.

Since 2003 NHCT has provided emergency financial assistance to individuals and families in North Hastings in response to poverty. In 2015 we began to expand our vision and work to include collective community based responses to the impacts of poverty and injustice.

We started with food! And an understanding that we can grow our own food together, share our skills and experience and create a healthier place to live. Harvest The North community gardens began in 2015 with ten raised beds in Riverside Park. Between 2016-2018 we increased by many more - 13 more raised beds, 4 big garden rows and gardens popping up everywhere. The gardens are doing more than grow food – they are bringing us together and building a stronger, more resilient community. It is all of us making this happen – from the generous donations of our local businesses, expertise of local farmers and growers, commitment and hours of work from hundreds of people of all ages – building and growing – both food and friendships.
