About
Words & Watercolor
An Ontario Culture Days Experience with J.L. Fizzell
What happens when we stop trying to control the outcome and allow creativity to lead the way?
Join Northern Ontario poet and workshop facilitator J.L. Fizzell for Words & Watercolor, a unique hands-on workshop that combines watercolor painting with reflective poetry. Participants will explore the beauty of watercolor's unpredictable nature, learning to embrace happy accidents, unexpected shapes, and organic movement on the page. From there, those creations become the inspiration for guided poetry exercises designed to uncover meaning, spark reflection, and transform images into words.
No experience with watercolor or poetry is required. This workshop is designed for beginners and experienced creatives alike, offering a welcoming space to experiment, create, and connect with others through the arts.
All supplies are included. Participants will leave with a completed 8x10 mixed-media piece featuring both watercolor and poetry, ready to take home and frame.
Registration is required. Space is limited.
This event is presented as part of Ontario Culture Days, a province-wide celebration that invites people to discover, participate in, and celebrate arts, culture, and heritage through free and accessible community experiences.
Whether you're a writer, an artist, or simply curious to try something new, Words & Watercolor offers an opportunity to slow down, create, and find beauty in the unexpected.

Join poet and workshop facilitator J.L. Fizzell for a creative experience that blends watercolor painting with reflective poetry. Together, we'll explore the art of letting go as watercolor flows, blends, and creates unexpected results beyond our control. Using those happy accidents, surprises, and imperfections as inspiration, participants will be guided through simple poetry exercises that transform color, shape, and emotion into meaningful words.
No previous experience with watercolor or poetry is required. What you do need is a willingness to experiment, reflect, and see where the process takes you. Participants will leave with a completed 8x10 watercolor and poem piece ready to take home, display, or frame as a unique reminder of their creative journey. All supplies included.
