About

Make your own needle felting bird with Holly Boone.

Take inspiration from the Alberta Craft Council’s feature exhibition Albirda: Put a Bird on It, you will explore the sculptural possibilities of felt, a durable material that has been used for centuries. Led by artist Holly Boone, in this needle felting workshop, participants will learn the basic techniques of needle felting with wool roving to create a colourful 3-dimensional bird sculpture.

Needle felting uses very special needles with little notches on the end called barbs. When pushed into the wool the barbs grab the fibres and tangles them together causing the wool to become more solid. The more the felt is poked, the more solid it becomes.

Holly Boone has been inspiring happiness through her needle felted creations since 2014. You can find her whimsical felt creatures at the Alberta Craft Gallery Shop, as well as the feature exhibition Albirda: Put a Bird on It in Edmonton until October 29.
