About
"Where The Sun Rises" is a Public Photography Exhibit by Mirna Chacín and curated by The STEPS Initiative as part of their PATCH Project. The artwork is the outcome of Mirna’s process to overcome nostalgia and cultural grief for her hometown (Maracaibo, Venezuela), while adapting to embrace her new home in Canada, by Lake Ontario.
Art and photography lovers are invited to a 30-minute Walking Tour alongside the Artist by the places she loves to live in and around the Construction Hoarding Exhibit commissioned by Menkes Developments next to Sugar Beach. The Walking Tour will be followed by an Artist Talk and refreshments at the ArtHub27, located at 39 Queens Quay East, Suite 100, Toronto.
During the event, Mirna will launch a limited edition ZINE about the artwork series - visitors will have the opportunity to purchase a signed copy.
About the Artist:
Mirna Chacín is a Venezuelan-born Canadian visual artist and freelance photographer passionate about people and telling their stories through images. Since the 1990s, her artwork has been shown in art galleries and museums in her home country, Venezuela, across Latin America, Italy, and Canada. Her latest solo exhibitions include “Where the Sun Rises,” an ongoing public display since April 2019, and “The Paraguaná Project,” which was the first-ever video mapping projection within a room of the MACZUL at The Contemporary Art Museum of Zulia, (Venezuela, 2014).
Most recently she has exhibited “Subject to Change and Geographies of Belongings,” (Toronto, May 2019) and “Sons of The Sun,” projected on walls and outdoor spaces of Los Angeles during the Month Of Photography Los Angeles (MOPLA, April 2019).

Organizer
The STEPS Initiative
STEPS is a Canadian-based charitable public art organization. Together with artists, community organizations, BIAs, and land developers, we facilitate one-of-a-kind cultural initiatives that work to improve public spaces and reflect and enhance local identity.
We facilitate a range of free community programs that build the capacity of emerging artists, engage youth on city-building issues, and support grassroots community-led public space projects.
Already a legislated requirement in Toronto, public art is being encouraged on construction sites across Canada. Our PATCH Project is the industry leader in connecting developers, construction groups, and marketing companies with local artists to help them meet public art requirements for their construction sites.
