About

An art journal is like a personal diary but with both pictures and words. Art journaling is a way to record our thoughts and feelings and to exercise our creativity muscles. It can also be fun and very therapeutic.

In the Art Journaling for Beginners video, Jeni will show you several techniques that you can utilize to start your own art journal with materials easily accessible or readily found around the house.

She will demonstrate step-by-step on how to create a self-portrait or personal symbol that inspire you and bring you joy. She will also show you how sometimes, mistakes can lead to surprisingly wonderful discoveries.

The video will become available to the public during BC Culture Days starting September 24, 2021. Meanwhile, check out the "Watch Video" link below for a list of suggested materials and a cheat sheet for drawing a cartoon head self-portrait.

Jeni will also be working on her art journal in-person on Saturday September 25 from 1pm-3pm at the plaza outside of the Richmond Cultural Centre. Come and try out her art journaling materials!

Organizer

Jeni Chen

Jeni Chen was born in Taiwan and moved to Canada with her family when she was a teenager. As a kid, Jeni loved to draw but stopped when she decided to pursue a more practical career in science. After the birth of her son, Jeni picked up her childhood passion and obtained a Fine Art Certificate from Emily Carr University of Art + Design. Since then, Jeni has been selected for several public art programs in Richmond. Currently, she is working on her debut picture book Emet’s Box to be published in spring 2022. And for fun, Jeni draws a webcomic series EJ Rascal about family life with her elementary school-aged son. You can find her comics on Instagram @JeniChenArt
