About
As our core theme for the Cultural Hotspot’s ‘FIND YOUR ELEMENT’ Project, the elements of water, fire, earth and air are explored through a pre-selected art medium and shaped into a performance, showcase and art pieces that represent the voice of the community and its vision for the local environment. Each element incorporated three parts: community workshops, artists’ lab and a public showcase/exhibition.
Water – The element of water is explored and represented through the use of installation art. Using the Humber River as an inspiration for community members and artists to explore and reflect on the history of the Humber River and York South-Weston. A 64ft(panelled) mural will be unveiled that will later be installed on the construction hoarding walls at West Park Healthcare Centre throughout the period of the hospital’s redevelopment process.
Fire – Movement-based activities inspired by the element of fire will be implemented. This includes expressive movement, hip hop dance styles exploring traditional dance forms to fully embody and manifest the fire element through dance.
Earth – Incorporates a variety of materials to create eco art pieces using plant life and other organic materials while learning about the impacts of pollution and ways to sustain, conserve and preserve our natural environment. An eco-art piece will be unveiled.
Air - An introduction to music creation through instruments specifically triggered through the use of breath and wind.
The Cultural Hotspot is a project of the City of Toronto that shines a spotlight on arts, culture and community outside of the downtown core; inspiring new ideas about where culture thrives in Toronto. ‘Find Your Element’ is a signature Project of the Cultural Hotspot 2019 for (former city of) York and North Etobicoke.
