About

Third-year Faculty of Architecture students from the University of Manitoba Environmental Design program are exploring neighbourhoods in Winnipeg. Later in the semester, they'll propose different ways to add new homes to the neighbourhoods – to help with Winnipeg's housing and infrastructural deficits while envisioning the city as more resilient and livable.

The students spent their first three weeks researching, walking, drawing, and filming in their chosen neighbourhoods. They've produced drawings and short films looking at the neighbourhoods through the lens of a book called To the Ends of the Earth by Robert Weller. This book is a taxonomy of landscape and urban forms, mainly indicators of Anthropocene stress: a fascinating and meaningful way to think about cities today, connecting climate concerns with conceptual exploration. Paradises, utopias, machines, monsters, ruins and instruments are the lenses through which these neighbourhoods are explored, with each film just 60 seconds long.

Come see this collection of drawings and one-minute films as part of the Winnipeg Design Festival’s focus on climate-conscious design + building.

The films will run from 6-10pm. The students will present their films at 7:00pm.
