About

As part of Shaunavon's Multicultural Festival, participants will learn to play traditional cultural games such as Loteria – a Mexican game similar to bingo, Indigenous hand games, and Filipino Sungka. Henna Tattoo artists will create designs for people interested in getting tattooed. A Cree knowledge keeper will teach how to say some basic Cree words and phrases. Local Indigenous people will teach about the four sacred medicines . An entertainment stage will feature cultural performers who will invite the public to participate in traditional songs and dances. People from all cultural backgrounds will be able to write the word “welcome” on a small canvas in their language, these smaller pieces will be assembled into a larger art piece that will then be placed on display at the Grand Coteau Centre. These games and activities will allow participants to learn about the language and traditions of many cultures in a fun and interactive way.

Grand Coteau Heritage & Cultural Centre

The Grand Coteau Heritage & Cultural Centre (GCHCC) houses a museum, art gallery and the Shaunavon Branch of the Chinook Regional Library.

Our museum collection is multi-disciplinary, including artifacts relating to the human history of Shaunavon, fine arts, and natural history specimens of the area.

Our art gallery hosts a minimum of six visual & media arts exhibitions per year featuring local artists and exhibitions available through the Organization of Saskatchewan Arts Councils Arts on the Move touring program.

A variety of programs and tours are offered in association with our art gallery and museum collection, making us more than a collection of objects. Educational programs are offered on a regular basis throughout the year to school students and can also be provided to other groups upon request. Our public programming provides opportunities for our community to learn & enjoy the arts, as well as the natural history and the human history of our area. The GCHCC is also a popular locale for many community gatherings and events.
