Surrey in 1949, an Interactive Aerial from the Surrey Archives
Digital & new media
History & heritage
See a 1949 aerial shot from anywhere in Surrey. Add layers to customize your tour with present day references, such as transportation routes, property lots and addresses, parks and other civic amenities. This tool is a result of a City of Surrey partnership between the Engineering Department's GIS team and the Surrey Archives. It is comprised of over 136 aerial images from the collection of the Surrey Archives, stitched together into one giant photograph. To access the COSMOS 1949 aerial click on the orange button below, make sure to give it time to load! Take a screenshot of your customized aerial, with places important to you in Surrey, and share it with us @HeritageSurrey on Facebook.
This event is free.
City of Surrey, Surrey Archives
The City of Surrey Heritage Services Department runs various parts of Heritage within the City of Surrey including Heritage Collections, Surrey Archives, Re-enactors, and Historic Stewart Farm. The mandate of our division is to share the diverse history of the Municipality of Surrey with our community. Our vision is to create a better community that reflects on the past. As part of our shift towards online programming these institutions have begun to focus on digital and remote programming, instead of in person interpretation. This aerial is created from sewing together over 136 aerials of Surrey in 1949 from the Surrey Archives permanent photography collection.
