While performing the role of Tybalt in the COC’s production of Roméo et Juliette, Ensemble Studio alumnus Owen McCausland traces the arc of German art song, from the restrained introspection of early Romanticism to the lush expressivity of its later flowering. Schumann and Strauss, though generations apart, both shaped music around the emotional contours of poetry. Where Schumann gives voice to solitude, yearning, and fleeting joy, Strauss answers with expansive lyricism and sensual devotion. Each composer, in his own way, illuminates the intimate bond between word and sound, showing that the voice—simple, unadorned—can express what lies beyond speech.
The Canadian Opera Company's Free Concert Series in the Richard Bradshaw Amphitheatre, presented by TD Bank Group, brings artists from around the world to share their talent and passion in one of Toronto's most breathtaking and intimate spaces. Running from September to May, the series invites visitors to discover 70 free performances that cross disciplines, styles, and genres -- from instrumental and vocal music, to dance, and everything in-between.
