About the exhibition:

RISE: Sandeep Johal and Sara Khan is on view at the Art Gallery at Evergreen from September 16–November 26, 2023. Shedding the weight of the recent past, Sandeep Johal and Sara Khan’s artistic collaboration gives rise to a playful and fantastical environment ruled by extraordinary creatures. The artists merge their distinct visual vocabulary of silhouettes, figures, geometric forms, floral patterns and rich colour palettes into new hybrid forms. Snakes, horned figures, animal-human hybrids and more inhabit the gallery in this weird and whimsical exhibition. This cast of characters draws on the strength of women, both real and imagined, to create an inviting yet surreal and energetic space where all are welcome.

We would like to acknowledge the BC Arts Council with support from the Province of British Columbia.

Evergreen Cultural Centre

Situated on the shores of Lafarge Lake in Town Centre Park, Evergreen Cultural Centre (ECC) exists on the unceded, traditional and ancestral core territory of the kʷikʷəƛ̓əm (Kwikwetlem) First Nations, which lie within the shared territories of the səli̓ lwətaɁɬ təməxʷ (Tsleil-Waututh), S’ólh Téméxw (Stó:lō), qiqéyt (Qayqayt) and sq̓əc̓iy̓aɁɬ təməxʷ (Katzie), xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam) and Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish) nations in the region known today as the Tri-Cities. Described by the City of Coquitlam as the “cultural jewel in Coquitlam’s Town Centre”, Evergreen Cultural Centre is the premiere venue for live arts events, exhibitions, and experiences in the Tri-Cities. We offer a thrilling season of performing arts presentations in our Studio Theatre, contemporary art exhibitions in the Art Gallery at Evergreen, and arts education programs in a variety of disciplines. We are dedicated to creating an inclusive and accessible community gathering place and invite visitors to immerse themselves in the magic of live performance and visual art.
