About

Join artist Reilly Knowles to discuss his work, including Magic Circle for Earth Communion, a large textile artwork made in response to an illustration in an appendix of a 2008 edition of The Sixth and Seventh Books of Moses (an influential handbook of magic used by settlers in Waterloo County as late as the 1950s). Occurring on the grounds of Museum London and in partnership with the museum’s Art Now! Program and Ontario Culture Days, this talk will explore subjects which inspired the artwork, including folk magic and the reformulation of our relationship to land.

Reilly Knowles (he/him) is an interdisciplinary artist living in London Township, Treaty Six territory (London, Ontario). His work explores supernatural stories and traditions from the settler cultures of Southern Ontario in order to reimagine settler relationships to the stolen Indigenous lands on which he lives. His intent is to foster a less violent and more meaningful connection with the land through traditions of storytelling and the fantastical. A Western University graduate (BFA), Knowles has exhibited with Forest City Gallery, Jordan Art Gallery, Queen Elizabeth Park Community & Cultural Centre and Good Sport Gallery, of which he is a member.

Magic Circle for Earth Communion by Reilly Knowles is commissioned as part of Ontario Culture Days' Creatives in Residence series and presented in partnership with Museum London.

Organizer

Ontario Culture Days

The Ontario Culture Days Festival is an annual celebration of arts, culture and heritage taking place each fall across the province. Each year, we work with organizers of all disciplines to produce this province-wide festival. Organizers host programs throughout Ontario and invite the public to participate for free.

Ontario Culture Days lives at the local level. We support organizers from the smallest hamlets to the largest cities, while coordinating with other national and provincial Culture Days partners. We support the success of our sector colleagues through resources and network development, while highlighting the breadth and heterogeneity of Ontario’s arts and culture to the wider public.
