Gateway Theatre, in collaboration with Richmond Public Art, has engaged artist Carmen Chan to transform our Gilbert Road-facing wall into a colourful, uplifting artistic piece. Named "Stages of Bloom" this mural embodies the magical personal transformation and unity when students, staff, visitors and patrons experience the beloved Gateway Theatre in Richmond. Five other new murals created through the 2021 Community Mural Program have also popped up in Richmond. Take a self guided tour organized by Richmond Public Art Program to see them all. Tomekichi Homma Elementary School, 5100 Brunswick Drive Mural by Atheana Picha The Richmond-based artist who created this work explores local Indigenous stories and themes of belonging and community. Westwind Elementary School, 11371 Kingfisher Drive Mural by Dawn Lo and April dela Noche Milne This playful mural considers the themes of inclusiveness and bringing people together. The work characterizes the playful spirit of Westwind School and community. It is a space where everyone feels welcomed for whom they are. McMath Secondary School, 4251 Garry Street Mural by Dean and Christina Lauzé The artists collaborated with the student community to design the mural, which is inspired by the natural environment surrounding the school. Thompson Elementary School, 6211 Forsyth Crescent Mural by Fiona Tang The mural concept is connected to the school motto: thinking - learning - caring. Ocean Concrete, 12651 Mitchell Road** Mural by Karen Yurkovich and Tristesse Seeliger This mural, titled "Metamorphosis", celebrates the cycles of nature and, metaphorically, the transformations of industry back to nature. The plant species depicted here are native to Mitchell Island. This is a self guided tour that can be completed by bike or car. **Please note that there is limited parking near the sites.
