About

Join Ann K Chou, BC Culture Days Ambassador, for an art jam event focused on accessibility, inclusion, and resilience. Celebrate diversity through engaging activities and creative expression. This enchanting event is scheduled for Oct 8, 2023. Please follow the Facebook link for registration. All individuals over the age of 10 are welcome to attend, and children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult.

Puppet Making Art Jam: Beyond Binary (2.5-3 hours)

Immerse yourself in a vibrant world beyond the binary construct. Puppets serve as a bridge between you and the world. Create your own expressive puppets that reflects your in-between world roots, questions gender labels, or invoke your inner child.

Before the workshop, we encourage you to think about your identity and bring personal objects, pictures, and materials to express it. Don't forget to bring your own colorful, fuzzy sock for making the puppet. Make sure your fist can fit inside the sock; bigger socks with mid to long collars work best (e.g., mid-calf height).

Live transcription services are available, and ASL translation is available upon request. We encourage you to bring your own fidgeting or sensory tools that make you feel comfortable. Please make sure to inform us of any specific access needs you have on the registration form. Your comfort and inclusivity are important to us.

There will be short breaks and light refreshments. There will be a photo op and short procession with the poppet at 7 pm in the nearest park.

This event was made possible with local support from Quadra Village Community Centre and Pandora Arts Collectives Society.

Quadra Village Community Centre

The Quadra Village Community Centre (Downtown Blanshard Advisory Committee) is a safe and welcoming gathering place and neighbourhood association in the vibrant and diverse neighbourhood of Hillside Quadra. We provide services, programs , and support to meet the various needs of individuals in our community. Since 1974 our preventative and responsive community based programs have helped make change close to home.

Ann K Chou, a visual technologist-artist from Hong Kong, is renowned for her spontaneous brushwork in Chinese calligraphy ink and vivid colored acrylics. She specializes in creating lanterns and wearable puppets using a diverse range of naturally found and upcycled materials, including heritage materials like bamboos. As a first-generation immigrant from Hong Kong, a severe hard-of-hearing individual, and someone on the autism spectrum, Ann's personal journey profoundly influences her art. She values the process of creation over the end-product and strives to break down boundaries while celebrating diversity through her artwork. Ann seamlessly blends static arts with live performances and digital interaction, pushing the boundaries of her bamboo-based lantern building skills. Alongside her career in people-centred Health IT, she has received training in photography, digital production, and soft sculpture. Currently participating in the ScreenDance residency, Ann focuses on creating all-disabilities accessible art. Her ultimate goal is to inspire others to reconsider system barriers, embrace diversity, and ensure that the arts are accessible to all, fostering a more inclusive artistic community.
