About
Here are two excerpts from my book Next Breath:
For whatever reason, you might have been miserable in the past five seconds, five minutes or five years. You have an option to change your situation substantially in the course of the next few moments. Begin by focusing your attention on your next breath. Make it deep. Observe the air as it enters your nostrils, throat and windpipe. Let it fill your lungs. Hold it there and then release it slowly and very gently. Repeat this a few times. You will see the tension melt away and clarity returning to you. If your mind strays or negative thoughts occur, notice them without dwelling on them. Continue to focus on your breath. Paying attention to your breath gives you immediate and direct access to a zone of tranquility and peace within you. That is the zone of the Watching Bird.
Who is this Watching Bird?
****
Hokusai the great Japanese artist summarizes the Buddha’s teachings in two great paintings.
The Great Wave off Kanagawa shows the storms in our minds. The second painting, Fine Wind, Clear Morning, shows serenity and clarity
in the absence of storms.
Enlightenment involves understanding that causes of storms are within us and gaining clarity and serenity.
