Enjoy listening to South Indian Classical vocal music to the accompaniment of Mridangam( A double sided Indian drum) and Violin! Get to know more about rhythm expressed through beats and wave of the hand! Learn more about this ancient art form which is widely used in Therapy for seniors, recreation and holistic healing!

Watch and observe 3 unique, virtual performances in 3 different languages by the professional artist & teacher, Sandhya Srivatsan and her students at Gaanavarshini.

Sandhya Srivatsan,Artistic Director Gaanavarshini

Sandhya Srivatsan, is an accomplished vocalist and music teacher. As a performer and teacher, she brings over 30 years of experience in the field. Over the years, Sandhya Srivatsan has trained hundreds of young children, youth, adults and senior students in Carnatic Vocal music, an art form from Southern India. As a Certified Gerontologist focused on doing research in creative aging and music therapy, Sandhya is highly experienced in conducting music recreation sessions for seniors, conducting Intergenerational work shops and appreciation courses on Indian classical music. She specializes in effects of music on moods and stress levels.

Gaanavarshini was founded in 2006 with the following mission:

Teach and impart Carnatic music (vocal singing) among youth and middle age population of South Asian origin.

Preserve and pass on this ancient art form to benefit Canadians of South Asian descent.

Develop an awareness of this rich cultural heritage among Canadians of varied origins and background.

Offer Carnatic music as a therapy/recreation to seniors in the community to assist in healthy aging.
