About
Join Emilyn Stam and John Williams in learning some fun social folk dances with live music! Balfolk is a term used in the last 50 years to describe popular social folk dancing in Western Europe. Balfolk dancing is popular social dancing from Western Europe, a recent revival of traditional, mostly French, folk dances. It includes old traditional dances from a variety of French and western European regions, as well as modern tunes influenced by many styles composed for people to dance to. Balfolk is not definable as one style, but rather an umbrella term for many ways of dancing and playing for a huge repertoire of dances. They are all fun and easy to learn, you don’t need any partners or prior experience. Emilyn and John will show you how and play live music as well!
Ontario based duo Emilyn Stam and John David Williams merge the voices of clarinet, violin, diatonic and chromatic accordions to create a modern sound steeped in tradition. They met in 2011 as members of the Lemon Bucket Orkestra. During quiet hours of busy tour schedules they discovered a similar sensibility in improvisation and composition, and began to create a distinctive duo sound mainly featuring clarinet and violin. They both draw on wide musical influences and experience including Klezmer, early jazz and blues, and various fiddle traditions from Canada and abroad. They are the primary organizers of the first Canadian festival dedicated to music and dance from western Europe: The Big Branch Festival. Emilyn and John are both members of the group Vinta along with Nathan Smith and Alan Mackie. Learn more at www.emilynandjohn.com and www.thebigbranchfestival.com
