About
The Arangya Creations Workshop is a free, hands-on cultural experience open to participants of all ages. It introduces participants to Arangya, a decorative chandelier or lantern traditionally made using kiping—thin, leaf-shaped wafers crafted from rice, dyed in vibrant colours, and used to decorate homes and buildings during the Pahiyas Festival in Lucban, Quezon, Philippines. The festival is one of the largest and most colourful harvest celebrations in the Philippines, held every May 15 in honour of San Isidro Labrador (Saint Isidore the Laborer), the patron saint of farmers.
Participants will create their own miniature Arangya-inspired decoration through a guided, hands-on workshop. Because traditional kiping is fragile and requires specialized techniques to produce, participants will instead use alternative craft materials provided through prepared kits sourced from the Philippines and created by makers connected to traditional practices.
Through this creative process, participants will gain an appreciation for the cultural significance of Arangya and its connection to community, creativity, gratitude for a bountiful harvest, and the enduring traditions celebrated during the Pahiyas Festival.

The Bayanihan Filipino Arts and Culture Club is a cultural performing group and registered non-profit organization based in Yorkton, Saskatchewan, established in January 2024. Our mission is to educate, promote, and preserve Filipino culture through vibrant performances, creative programming, and community engagement. We aim to pass on our artistic heritage and values to future generations while fostering understanding, pride, and connection among youth and families of all backgrounds.
Why “Bayanihan”?
Founded by Jhonnette Derkatch and AnnaLissa Ubongen, the club takes its name from the Filipino tradition of bayanihan — the spirit of communal unity and cooperation. Historically, bayanihan is best symbolized by neighbors helping to move a house to a new location. In the same way, we unite people through a shared love for Filipino arts, culture, and community spirit.

Since our inception, these ensembles have brought the richness of Filipino culture to life, performing at local events and beyond. We proudly completed our first Summer Program for youth, offering diverse cultural workshops and activities, and hosted our first out-of-town folk dance workshop in Oxbow, SK, during their Multicultural Day celebration.
