About
A Practice in Gestures
Farheen HaQ, Deborah Koenker, Bev Koski, Mitra Mahmoodi, Bettina Matzkuhn, Barbara Zeigler
Curated by Nan Capogna
September 10 - November 7, 2021
This exhibition draws together works by BC artists Farheen HaQ, Deborah Koenker, Bev Koski, Mitra Mahmoodi, Bettina Matzkuhn, and Barbara Zeigler. Ordinary gestures underpin and give shape to the rituals that rise from the embroidery, beading, ceramic and video works comprising A Practice in Gestures. While such activities such as stitching, washing, and serving are rooted in seemingly benign domestic familiarity, they foreground colonial and patriarchal narratives as well as critical environmental imperatives.
These six artists’ practices span decades, ranging from emerging to over forty years – and illustrate ways of a meaningful art practice, the inquiry it advances and the kind of knowledge art objects have.
