PIIKANIKOAN : Living Under A Blackfoot Sky- A Modern Winter Count
Curated by Ira Provost and Created by the Galt Museum and Archives in Lethbridge, Alberta.
We invite you to join us on Saturday, September 20th from 1pm to 4pm when will be hosting a free come and go social with light refreshments provided! This exhibition will be curated throughout the Lebel hallways and public spaces, inviting visitors to explore.
Piikanikoan invites audiences to explore Blackfoot (Niitsitapi) cultural heritage through a combination of art, stories, and songs. Through the lens of his own musical journey, Piikani Nation member Ira Provost delves into the significance of Blackfoot music, its origins and its influence on his life story. This exhibition explores Ira’s biocultural heritage, education, career, culture and its place within the southern Alberta landscape through a modern Winter Count—a medium that traditionally functioned as a record or calendar to document personal, tribal, practical and ceremonial events.
Piikanikoan highlights the resiliency and strength of Niitsitapi culture, while also sharing a message of understanding and meaningful relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities.
