About

Dive from your sofa-boat to move with crabs, sharks and pufferfish!

Designed with the very young in mind (age 3–7) Under the Sea (Sous la Mer) explores creative movements inspired by sea creatures such as pufferfish, crabs, and sharks. Build a cozy boat with cushions and blankets and dive into your adventure. Baby crabs: can you crawl under your mama crab? Papa sharks: can you follow baby shark where-ever they go? Pufferfishes: how big and how small can you dance?

This enchanting performance filled with music and movement will get the whole family up off the couch and on their feet! This interactive show designed to engage and spark the curiosity of young minds was created by Foolish Operations who also created the charming world of Paper Playground, a Surrey International Children's Festival commission. Available in both English and French.

About Foolish Operations

Foolish Operations is about people of all generations discovering and creating new dance experiences together. Our mandate is to create contemporary dance experiences with and for an audience of all ages. The mission of our society is to create and discover new dance experiences where professionals and non-professionals, young and old alike are capable, make choices and solve problems, lead and follow, create and collaborate. Using the power of play to re-shape reality, we celebrate children, including babies, toddlers, and preschoolers, as agents of their own creative choices so that, together, we can build a healthier and more connected future for all. Our work is intergenerational, inter-subjective, place-based, and involves families and participants of all ages and walks of life alongside professional artists, educators, specialists, and cultural knowledge keepers to learn from each other and collaborate to the creation of new choreographic works, participatory installations, workshops, conferences, and professional development initiatives. With a focus on healthy relations and environment, our process is rooted in community engaged practice. This includes respect and consideration to reduce the environmental impact of our initiatives. It also includes contributing and supporting the strategic planning of emerging artists and organizations, especially of BIPOC and minority language communities, interested in performance practice with and for children and families.

Surrey Civic Theatres

Surrey Civic Theatres are built on the unceded territories of the se’mya’me (Semiahmoo), q̓ʷɑ:n̓ƛ̓ən̓ (Kwantlen), and q̓ic̓əy̓ (Katzie) nations. We are honoured to work and learn on land they have stewarded since time immemorial.

Surrey Civic Theatres are owned and operated by the City of Surrey. Venues include the Main Stage and Studio Theatre inside the Surrey Arts Centre, and Centre Stage located inside Surrey City Hall.

Events held on these stages are both programmed by Surrey Civic Theatres’ staff, as well as presented by organizations and individuals who rent the theatres. Together, they provide the community with a spectrum of performing arts and entertainment options.

Surrey Civic Theatres also support the training and development of emerging artists through performing arts classes and workshops including day camps for children, youth, and adults.

The annual Surrey International Children’s Festival is produced as part of the Surrey Civic Theatres’ portfolio of programming.

Guided by the best practices of performing arts venues in Canada, Surrey Civic Theatres ensures its venues are safe for audiences, artists, and their specialized staff. All venues feature LED lighting to be more sustainable.

Together, the three venues support a busy schedule of high-quality performing arts from classical music and dance from a variety of cultures, through to socially engaged theatre productions for all ages, as well as numerous community events.
