About

Inspired by Metis Artist Tracey Mae Chambers' #hopeandhealingcanada, we will be working together to weave large circular webs to showcase the interconnectedness we share through an inheritance from our past and our intention for the future. Each string that is weaved represents a life line rich in history and as we build the circles together, we are showcasing how our stories all intertwine and thus planting seeds for a stronger community as we gain empathy and understanding.

Drop by throughout the day and add your threads to the pieces! It is a symbolic act and therefore you can participate as long as you like. We will be using a variety of string like materials and hula hoops as our circular bases.

All ages and backgrounds are highly encouraged to help accurately represent the community! Everyone is welcome to this public art piece.

This activity is funded by the City of Barrie for Culture Days 2024.

Organizer

Monica Loney

A Metis visual artist who believes in the power of art to unite a community. I am no stranger to public art and working a scissor lift. You can find me advocating for public art with guided tours as well as through my own large scale pieces and installations located within Simcoe County. I was the recipient of the 2022 Emerging Artist Award for the City of Barrie and have continued forward showcasing the powerful benefits of art as my mission. Some of my ink on paper works can be found on display at the Legislative Assembly of Ontario's Gathering Place Exhibit and have been showcased on various platforms promoting Indigenous art. My personal works mainly focus on the use of the continuous line to represent the universal connection we all share and our relation to Mother Earth.

"Community is the heart of a city, and art plays a role in connecting us all."
