This is a free outdoor event with plenty of room to distance. Learn about the rituals and customs used by Ukrainian Catholics. Meet amateur and visual artists while you paint a beautiful domed building . Space is limited to 30 artists but there is plenty of room for spectators to view artists at work. There will be washrooms and water available to wash brushes. Irene can help with any art questions you may have. Wheelchair accessible. You may arrive a half hour early to set up and find the view you wish to paint.

Please bring your own art supplies, optional - acrylic gold paint, an extra canvas board, chair, table or easel. There will be a lunch break so pack food, plenty of bottled water or a snack. Bring a hat. You may leave after your art is completed or stay and socialize, watch others work and be in a group photo with our art.

Organizer

Visual Ukrainian Artist : Irene Warmenhoven

Irene Warmenhoven was raised in the Ukrainian Catholic faith in Kirkland Lake Ontario and was awed by the ornate religious artwork she saw as a child. This later influenced her art practice. She has studied iconography and today creates religious contemporary portraiture and icons. Aware that many Churches have closed and been sold she sees a need to preserve the History of immigrant Ukrainians who settled in Thunder Bay in the 1930's before architectural evidence of their existence is lost.

In the past she travelled to Winnipeg, Manitoba, a known Ukrainian community, where she was granted an interview with one of the few Iconographers in Canada and received some instruction on how to create an icon. This was followed by research in the library at Oseredok Ukrainian Cultural and Education Centre. She has been painting icons for over 8 years.
