About

In recognition of September 30, National Day of Truth & Reconciliation, the program will open at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, September 26 with blessings from Sylvia Thorburn, setting a tone of gratitude, unity, and respect. Immediately following, Catherine Aguilar of the Southwest Multicultural Association will deliver a land acknowledgement, honoring the Indigenous peoples who have cared for and stewarded these lands for generations.

A flag hoisting ceremony will then take place, symbolizing pride, recognition, and the ongoing journey toward reconciliation. The community will also hear greetings from the Mayor, with an invitation extended to Everett Hindley to speak if his schedule allows.

David Fox, representing Living Sky Casino, will speak briefly on the importance of treaties in building mutual understanding and respect among all peoples. He will then introduce the event’s featured presenter, Dr. Zoey Roy—a dynamic educator, artist, and advocate whose work inspires dialogue and action toward social justice and inclusion. Zoey’s presentation will offer powerful insights into reconciliation, identity, and the shared responsibilities of building a stronger, more unified community.

Following her presentation, the audience will be treated to the music of drummer Delvin Stanley from Nekaneet First Nation. His performance will add a moving and spiritual close to the program, offering a reminder of the deep cultural traditions that continue to thrive and shape our shared heritage.

Attendees will include students from the Chinook School Division alongside members of the public, creating an intergenerational space for learning and connection. The gathering is an opportunity for students, residents, and community leaders to come together in reflection, celebration, and mutual understanding.

Through its blend of ceremony, education, and cultural expression, the September 26 event will stand as a meaningful moment in Swift Current’s ongoing journey of reconciliation and community building. We invite all to join us at Market Square at 11:30 a.m. and be part of this important conversation—one that honours the past, celebrates the present, and inspires hope for the future.
