About

This community outreach event comprises two engaging presentations built around the 2019 Culture Days theme Creativity, the Arts, and Wellbeing. Attendees will gain insight to research linking creativity and wellness. A 6pm talk Music for Mental Health will be given by Jennifer Buchanan, a music therapist, followed at 7pm with Prescriptions for Art by artist Dick Averns.

Attendees can share their own insight by contributing personal narratives in either of the Q+A sessions following each talk and during the discussion sessions. Art, Music and Wellbeing is a SITE cPROJECT promoting wellbeing through artistic programming and creative peer support, for anyone touched by mood disorders. cPROJECTS are an initiative of OBAD (Organization for Bipolar Affective Disorder).

This event is free. You may attend either the whole event or just one or two components. Pre-registration via eventbrite is encouraged. Drop-in attendance welcome based on space.

For entrepreneurs in the health and wellness field Jennifer Buchanan’s recent book Wellness Incorporated, offering accessible insight to socially-minded healthcare, will be on sale at the event.

a SITE cPROJECT by OBAD

As a professionally accredited music therapist, health entrepreneur and public speaker our first presenter Jennifer Buchanan actively advocates for wellness on many fronts. Having worked with individuals, community groups, corporations and health professionals, Jennifer’s practice contributes to community wellness across age, gender and ability, including a recent clinical trial at Calgary’s Foothills Hospital.

Turning to our second presenter, Dick Averns is an artist, writer and educator whose practice probes how mental and physical spaces are valued and exchanged. Diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome in adulthood, collaborations addressing socio-political themes feature regularly in his practice including conflict, and mental wellness.

This event is produced by Organization for Bipolar Affective Disorders Society (OBAD): a non-profit society dedicated to helping individuals and families, affected directly or indirectly, by mood disorders, depression and anxiety. OBAD collaborates with a cross-section of stakeholders including the broader arts-based community, academia/research, and mental health organizations. OBAD’s board includes artists, designers, musicians and writers. Our mission is also to promote mental health through creativity.
