About

Lhtako Dene Orange Shirt Day Prayers is a solemn and significant event held in Quesnel on Truth and Reconciliation Day in Canada. This gathering honors the survivors of residential schools and commemorates the children who never returned home. Organized by the Lhtako Dene Nation, the event brings together community members to reflect, remember, and promote healing.

On this day, participants wear orange shirts, a symbol inspired by Phyllis Webstad’s story of having her new orange shirt taken away on her first day at a residential school. The event begins with a traditional prayer ceremony led by Elders, who offer blessings and share wisdom, fostering a sense of unity and respect.

The gathering includes heartfelt speeches from survivors and community leaders, sharing personal stories and insights about the impact of residential schools. These narratives highlight the importance of acknowledging the past and working towards a future of reconciliation and understanding.

Cultural performances, such as drumming, singing, and traditional dances, enrich the event, celebrating Indigenous heritage and resilience. Educational activities and information booths provide attendees with resources and knowledge about the history and legacy of residential schools.

Lhtako Dene Orange Shirt Day Prayers is a powerful reminder of the ongoing journey towards reconciliation. It offers a space for reflection, learning, and coming together as a community to honor the past and commit to a better future.
