About

In partnership with the National Film Board of Canada please join Miltn Public Library for a virtual film presentation featuring three short films by Indigenous filmmakers Melaw Nakehk’o, Janine Windolph, and Jay Cardinal Villeneuve. The films will be shown via Zoom; we'll send you the login information on the day of the program, so please ensure your email address is correct.

K'i Tah Amongst the Birch: Filmmaker/activist Melaw Nakehk’o spent the pandemic with her family at a remote land camp in the Northwest Territories, “getting wood, listening to the wind, staying warm and dry, and watching the sun move across the sky.” In documenting camp life—activities like making fish leather and scraping moose hide—she anchors the COVID experience in a specific time and place.

Stories are in Our Bones: In this layered short film, filmmaker Janine Windolph takes her young sons fishing with their kokum (grandmother), a residential school survivor who retains a deep knowledge and memory of the land. The act of reconnecting with their homeland is a cultural and familial healing journey for the boys, who are growing up in the city. It’s also a powerful form of resistance for the women.

Holy Angels: In 1963, Lena Wandering Spirit became one of the more than 150,000 Indigenous children who were removed from their families and sent to residential school. Jay Cardinal Villeneuve’s short documentary powerfully recaptures Canada’s colonialist history through impressionistic images and the fragmented language of a child.
