About

The Science of Craft – a shrink film workshop lead by artist Kari Woo

Remember Shrinky Dinks? They're magic sheets that you draw on or color in, cut out and put in the oven. Transformed and shrunk by the heat, pieces come out a fraction of the size. Join artist Kari Woo to learn about the versatility of this material in this short and sweet workshop.

Drawing inspiration from the Alberta Craft Council’s exhibition Craft and Science, explore the interesting ways that science and craft intersect. Incorporating botanical, mechanical, and anatomical imagery, have fun and try your hand using shrink film to make your own piece of jewelry or dangle. All materials provided.

Suitable for ages 10+, minors must be accompanied by an adult. As space is limited, all attendees must be registered.

Kari Woo is a 2003 graduate (BFA with Distinction) from the Alberta University of the Arts. She is an experienced and committed craft community organizer and volunteer who advocates for the handmade economy and as such was a recent recipient of the Alberta Craft Council 2021 Tom McFall Honour Award. As a full-time studio jeweller, entrepreneur and mixed media artist Woo's practice has been buoyed over the years by extending her creative activity into new-to-her arenas such as arts instruction, installation, public art and curatorial projects.

Three workshop time-slots available:

12:45 - 1:30 PM

1:45 - 2:30 PM

2:45 - 3:30 PM

This programming is kindly supported by Alberta Culture Days and the Government of Alberta .

Alberta Craft Council

The Alberta Craft Gallery is the Calgary location of the Alberta Craft Council, a Provincial Arts Service Organization that develops, promotes, and advocates for fine craft in Alberta. As an anchor tenant in cSPACE, a vibrant cultural hub in Marda Loop, we offer exhibitions free to the public along with a retail gallery where you can experience fabulous shopping and discover exceptional fine craft in clay, wood, metal, jewellery, fibre, stone and glass hand-made by Alberta artists. We support contemporary and heritage crafts as significant art forms that contribute to Alberta’s culture, and are invested in developing a craft sector of creative, skilled, viable, and sustainable craftspeople, studios, businesses, and networks.
